COPES is a 3-member Japanese co-ed band under No Big Deals Records. The group consists of Nanako Kamei, Yuuki Shiina, and Chota. The band was formed in Tokyo, Japan in 2021. They released their first demo tape in September 2021, titled “WIN” before officially signing to a label in June 2026.

Group Name Meaning: To “COPE” is to deal with and overcome the difficult, stressful hard times that life throws at us. Founded in 2021 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the band emerged at a time of extreme difficulty and uncertainty for the music industry and everyday people alike. The name’s purpose is the need and desire to cope and face those times when it all feels uncertain.

– Nanako is described to have a kind crystal clear voice and as COPES’ unstoppable ball of energy.
– She has stated in an interview that she does not write her songs with the intention of being happy. They tend to be negative, but the more unpleasant things that happen to her is just more things to write.
– She loves the manga Chibi Maruko-chan.
– Nanako is the one usually representing her band for promotions.
– When hearing the news that her band was going to go for a more pop-punk sound, two days before meeting her band in the studio, she felt as her skills weren’t up to speed, so she went out to buy a Gibson Les Paul guitar and a Macbook to start writing and creating music out of enthusiasm.
– On her X (Twitter) biography she refers to herself as “kumori onna,” meaning cloudy woman. In Japanese culture, Japanese people tend to joke about what kind of person they are when they step outside. In this situation, Nanako is a cloudy woman.

Chota Facts:
– He originally joined COPES in 2022 as a support member but got promoted to a full time member after two years of touring with Nanako and Yuuki for nearly two years.
– He started playing the drums in high school.
– He is the most experienced member.
– He has played for many other bands before joining COPES.
– Chota teaches drums and works closely with music clubs.
– He states that joining COPES was a hard decision but wanted to give it a try.
– Chota is also a support live drummer for another Japanese punk band, LONGMAN. He started playing for them in the summer of 2025.
– Chota often has to do double performances for both COPES and LONGMAN. One time at MURO festival, he played back to back from COPES to LONGMAN.
